Video and 3D come to eBay
eBay is rolling out the ability to provide video clips in the picture gallery section of eBay listings.
It is technically possible to embed videos into the description, but these are clunky and require buyers to copy and paste the link on mobile which takes them to YouTube – they then have to return to eBay to purchase. If not properly coded the video will show up as a blank space instead on mobile.
The new option is to have short video clips as the second image , and this is now available to all sellers who use third party integrations (as long as they support it) or the eBay API. The videos only show on mobile view at the moment, but there are plans to show them on the desktop as well.
There are conditions as usual – videos need to be clear, not include nudity or illegal content, and not infringe copyright laws.
The best videos are those that add value to listings by explaining how a product works or is installed, and that is specific to that product – generic videos which promote your brand or feature a number of products will not be as useful.
A few examples of effective video types include:
- Product instructions/ how-to videos
- Installation guides (e.g. for Parts & Accessories)
- DIY videos (for example, a woodwork project using a power tool or a recipe using a kitchen appliance)
- Unboxing videos
- Videos that clarify the item condition (e.g. scuffs, nicks, tears)
eBay Video format requirements
- The maximum supported video size is 150 MB
- The maximum upload resolution is 1080p
- Supported output resolutions are 240p, 360p, 480p, and 720p
- Supported formats are the following mp4 file types:
- MPEG-4 Part 10
- Advanced Video Coding (MPEG-4 AVC)
- Providing links to YouTube or other video platforms is not supported
- Videos should be no longer than 3 minutes (but preferably one minute or less)
