Another option for eBay Promoted Ads – this time it’s stores
eBay is expanding the beta test for Promoted Display Ads for Stores to more sellers as pressure to increase ad revenue growth continues. This is still an invitation only, Beta mode.
These ads appear in high level placement on the View Item page, just under the seller information on the right-hand side (see box in red). Currently eBay is using this space for ads for nectar points, BT broadband, and eBay itself:
However, for several months now we have sometimes seen other shops advertised in this space, with the rather dismaying captions of “Shop Similar Items”, “Discover Related items” or “Explore a Related Store” – this last version is particularly worrying as it implies a relationship between the advertised store and the listing product. This is similar to Amazon, where it is common to see adverts for other sellers on a product page.
eBay says “Promoted Display is different from Promoted Listings Standard and Promoted Listings Advanced because you don’t need to choose individual listings to promote. Simply choose a category in your store to promote, set your bid, and eBay will optimize the ad on your behalf.”
It’s unclear as to whether you will compete just with other eBay sellers for this spot or also with third party businesses such as BT – in which case the bid for clicks could be extremely high.
Caution will be needed to decide if this is a good idea for your business – if you want a particular type of item such as a specific battery, it could well be a waste of clicks when buyers realise that they want a different item to that advertised.
